My Workspace

My Colored Pencil Organizer
I'll admit it - when I first started using colored pencils about seven months ago, I worked hunched over a coffee table sitting on my living room sofa. Since then, my workspace has vastly improved (as has my aching back), because I have created a dedicated workspace in the upstairs office. Probably my favorite improvement is my colored pencil organizer, pictured above. I own about 200 colored pencils, plus all of the spares I have for colors I use often. I used to keep them in their original plastic trays and cardboard boxes, but they took up most of my desk and were not easily accessible. I spent countless hours researching pencil organizers, but couldn't find anything that would contain so many pencils while keeping them organized and easily accessible. Then I read about some colored pencil artists who had found that fishing tackle boxes worked well to organize their pencils. I started looking into it, but didn't find them to be ideal in terms of keeping the pencils separate and readily accessible. However, after many hours of searching, I finally found this wonderful tackle box with 96 vertical compartments that are exactly 7" deep (the length of an unsharpened pencil). I keep the tackle box open and sitting on it's side, so that I have all of the pencils at my fingertips. Another advantage of this organizer is that I can see the lead, which is not always accurately represented by the color painted on the sides of the pencil. Finally, I love that this organizer is so portable - just zip it up and go! Now I just need to find a way to organize all of those shoes on the floor in my closet...

What a great set up for colored pencil storage! I have been searching for a year for some way to keep my design office's stock of colored pencils & pens organized, and this is perfect!
I know this is an older post, but do you remember where you found this tackle box? I have been having no luck with my internet searches. Any help you could offer would be appreciated, and fabulous blog!
